Level 1 Magic Spell List

The level 1 spells are a little overwhelming so I though I would present them in a table. Conveniently, there are 20 of them. The idea is that, for example, if you get 3 spells at 1st level, you roll d6 for your (starred) Major spell, then d20; if you hit another Major or a spell you already rolled, you get your choice of a spell in a school you already have.

I want to work out these spells to at least 3rd level and maybe beyond. I'm not going to clog the blog with full writeups for each of those, though. There will be one-line writeups with short function descriptions. As you see, I have also been writing short paragraphs for the 1st level spells with a bit more detail for the most common cases when these spells might be judged.

Probably the final product will have tables like the one above with additional columns for range, duration, save and a short, 2 line description of the effect. These will be backed up by additional paragraphs with extra rulings; but a confident referee could take the short lists and make ad-hoc rulings from them.

So - any thoughts so far?

  1. What about specialists in a particular school? Would they get their school major by default? I am a big fan of the specialist Wizard and I hope they would get some love.

  2. Oh yeah, it wouldn't be a color system without specialists. At some point I will cover a number of options for magic systems. It is hard to separate system from setting though especially when it comes to magic. My choice here is to give a versatile framework that can be rigged in a number of world-defined ways.
